UOP Baton Rouge Facility Fact Sheet

Type of Facility: The world’s largest supplier of activated alumina and versal alumina powders. These adsorbents are used by the refining industry to remove contaminants such as sulfur, mercury, oxygenated water, fluoride, chloride and arsine.
Products: Supplier of alumina, which is a nontoxic, specialty chemical used by other industries to cleanse and assist in manufacturing processes. Aluminas are also commonly used around the world to help make a variety of products, including plastics, gasoline, hydrogen and natural gas.
Employment: The UOP Baton Rouge site employs approximately 50 workers, including 35 employees represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers.
History: The 36-acre site was built by the U.S. government in 1939. It is located at the farthest inland deepwater port on the Mississippi River and was originally operated by ALCOA to process materials used in World War II. In the 1950s, the site was sold to Kaiser Aluminum Company and in 1988 to LaRoche Industries. The site received ISO certification in 1998 and was purchased by UOP in 1999. It achieved the Honeywell Operating System (HOS) Bronze certification in September 2012.

Plant Economics: Honeywell spends about $8.7 million per year for goods and services in the local community to support the operation of the Honeywell UOP Baton Rouge plant.In addition to Honeywell UOP Baton Rouge’s own employees, the plant is responsible for nearly 100 additional jobs in the community. This includes jobs that support the facility’s off-site warehouse, as well as jobs related to security, engineering, construction and raw materials.
Plant Investments: In 2012, Honeywell invested significantly to upgrade and expand to the Honeywell UOP Baton Rouge facility. These investments have been reflected in our improvements health, safety, environmental, and economic performance as we continue to strive for excellence in our facility.In 2013, Honeywell will also invest in a major line expansion project at the UOP Baton Rouge facility.
